It is a dry wood of Cissus quadrangularis belonging to the grape family. It is also known as a Hadjod in Hindi. The stem is succulent, quadrangular. The leaves are simple. It is a tropical tree found in Africa, Arabia, India and Sri Lanka. It is naturalized in Thailand, Java and the Philippines. It grows in both arid or semi-arid areas, near the coast and up to an altitude of 200 m. It is found in South Asia. It is an important medicinal plant in Southern and Southeast Asia. In India, its stem is eaten by frying or making curry. The fruits are oval, red when ripe. In South Africa, it is also used by farmers to treat worm infestations in livestock and whooping cough. These are names associated with bones. Bone destruction is called Hadjod in Hindi. Hadjod is most commonly used in Ayurveda as a medicine for connecting bones. Apart from this, it is also useful in the treatment of stomach related problems, piles, leucorrhoea, sprains, ulcers etc.
